Can Botox injections reduce my excessive armpit sweating?

We all sweat, it is how our bodies regulate our temperature. However, some people can sweat excessively. This can be extremely embarrassing and can lower an individual’s confidence and self-esteem. As a result, some people do not like to attend social events such as parties or gatherings because they are too embarrassed and cannot control their sweating.

I can relate to a certain extent to the feeling of being embarrassed due to armpit sweating, as I recently attended a business event where there were hundreds of people, and for some reason I began to sweat as I was walking around. This made me feel very uncomfortable and paranoid. I freshened up in the bathroom, but I continued to sweat. This was very unusual to me because when I sweat it is very minimal, and mainly happens when I am busy and rushing around.

However, excessive sweating in the armpits can be caused or triggered by many different factors such as; eating spicy foods, and having an increased caffeine intake. Undiagnosed or underlying medical conditions such as diabetes could be potential causes of the excessive sweating. People who have active lifestyles such as going to the gym or carrying out strenuous activities can lead to an increased amount of sweat. Puberty, menopause, stress and genetics can also be possible causes.

Excessive sweating, sweating way more than usual is called Hyperhidrosis. This embarrassing issue can be dramatically reduced or stopped by using Botulinum Toxin (Botox), results could last up to one year. Botox injections for treating Hyperhidrosis are effective and can allow people who suffer from Hyperhidrosis to lead a normal life.

Hyperhidrosis consists of a series of Botox injections, injected into the armpit area, where sweat glands have been highlighted with iodine and corn-starch, which indicate where there is excessive sweating. The Botox works by blocking off the nerves which cause sweating for a period of time. The treatment is not uncomfortable as the armpits are not overly sensitive. Results can leave you sweat free or reduced greatly.

The image on the top illustrates the left and right armpits before hyperhidrosis treatment. The black area is where the iodine and corn-starch have highlighted the sweat glands. The image on the bottom illustrates the results of the left and right armpits following the treatment. The black areas show how much the excessive sweating has been reduced, and also how effective the treatment has been.

It is important before undergoing any treatments that you have had a consultation with a professional aesthetic practitioner who is able to guide you, and also that they are able to identify any underlying issues that may be a cause of the excessive sweating.
